Red Sox vs. Mariners

Fenway Park
August 14, 1999

He sets... ...he winds... ...he throws!

Pedro pitched like Pedro for the next four innings. Every time he reached two strikes on a batter, the crowd went wild in anticipation of the strikeout. His first strikeout of the game was his 200th of the season, and the fans in the bleachers hung up a specially-colored "K" to denote the milestone. I lost my voice by the sixth inning, but kept cheering anyway.

In his first inning of work, Pedro gave up a long solo home run to Alex Rodriguez, but the Red Sox got the run back in the bottom of the inning, when Nomar doubled down the left field line and scored on Mike Stanley's single. In the seventh, Brian Daubach hit a three-run homer into the visitors' bullpen. The Sox added another run on Nomar's third double of the afternoon, which scored Jose Offerman. Daubach came up again in the eighth to a standing ovation, and knocked in his fifth run of the day, on his fifth hit. Pedro retired the side in order in the ninth, and the game was ours!

Since Florie hadn't gone 5 innings, and Cormier gave up a hit to the only batter he faced, Pedro was awarded his 17th win of the season for his four strong innings and six strikeouts. The final score is below.

The final score

It wasn't until we got home that we learned the real reason for Florie's start. Pedro had arrived at the park late, and was scratched from his start. The media tried to blow it out of proportion later, but there was nothing but good will and concern for the health of our ace that day at Fenway Park. We got to see a 13-2 Red Sox victory that started out as a pitchers' duel, a last-minute controversy, a small brawl, and a Pedro outing - all in one day! Offerman homered, Nomar hit three doubles, and Daubach went 5-5 with a home run and five RBI.  I wonder how next year's game can top that...
